Stanley Cup Final Game Three

Paul and I were phenomenally lucky this past weekend and came into some tickets to game three of the Stanley Cup finals. For those of you not from around here, the Ottawa Senators are playing the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and are, sadly, losing three games to one.

Thankfully with Lord Stanley on our side Saturday night, the Sens came through for a great game and a spectacular victory - beating the Mighty Ducks 5-3. Around these parts hockey is EVERYTHING so being in the Stanley Cup finals is huge for this city. The atmosphere is simply electric and family-like, complete strangers hugging and slapping high fives when the Sens win. And on the other side of things, sharing compassion for each other on sad nights like last night, when the Sens lost 3-2 in game four at home.

We truly hope our Sens can bring back another win as the head back to the Governator's territory, so for now we'll wait in anticipation and cross fingers with the rest of the city.

Here is a shot of the crowds and the pre-game excitement before Saturday night's game:

Here's looking directly at Scotiabank Place, before we went inside:

Paul . . . very excited to get in and find his seat:

Dave and Paul enjoying a beer up in our nosebleed seats - second row from the TOP. I'm sure an airplane almost hit my head ;-)

Paul and I enjoying the game!!! And looking totally lame b/c we are the enjoy cheapskates who don't own Sens jerseys . . .

A look at the ice from WAY up in row R, section 3!

Warm up!!

For the second period I switched seats with Doug so I could sit with Karla in their season ticket holder seats, first row of the third section. Here is the second period face off - *big* difference in viewing and much closer to the ice. Best seats in the house, I'd say!!!

No Impact Man

Aside from becoming recently addicted to Facebook, I have also been spending some of my time visiting my new favourite blog.

http://www.noimpactman.typepad.com/blog/

It's fascinating stuff. This guy is living his life for a year attempting to make no impact on the earth and our environment. This Saturday he turns off his power - yes, like all his power. He's going to generate his laptop from a solar panel!! He cleans his own laundry in his bathtab, stomping his shirt stains clean with his feet! All the power to him (no pun intended), I'm completely in awe.

I like to think of myself as an environmentalist, within reason. I use cloth diapers. I compost. I recycle. I reuse whatever I can. I try to limit my garbage. I finally swore off plastic bags. And chemical cleaners. I have a low-flush toilet. I rarely use my air conditioner in the summer. I hang all my clothes on my line to dry. I pick up my cocker spaniel's poop and flush it down the toilet. I buy organic food - well, sometimes, when it is convenient and not overly expensive. I'm trying to remember my refill coffee cup when I head out for java so I don't need any of those useless Starbucks and Tim Horton's cups.

But give up coffee like No Impact Man and his wife Michelle? I'm so not there yet I'm afraid. Give up my mini-van? The large gas-guzzling machine I swore at age 22 I'd never own, yet which has become a bit like a close knit member of my own family, a necessary evil which enables me to transport 2 toddlers and a dog and a husband and potential cargo all over the city? Or the country for that matter? Nope. Can't give it up yet. Cannot do it.

There's not even a moral to my story. Just that I'm enjoying reading No Impact Man's blog and it is making me re-think various choices I make each day. And sadly, I'll still ponder these daily thoughts with my sometimes-not-fair-trade-bought cups of coffee :-)

Ever had one of these in your backyard?

We had a nasty windstorm last week and at around midnight Paul and I heard a gigantic thud in the backyard. We were sure a tree had come down, it was so loud. We jumped out of bed to check out the backyard, and found our neighbour's *makeshift* garage had flipped over our 10 foot hedge, ripped down our cable wire, tore some siding off the house and landed upside down in our backyard.

Upon further review we learned these garage-wanna-bes are actually not legal here in our city. But the neighbours were great, fixed everything and tidied up the yard quickly. Not to mention they entertained the boys with all this for close to 60 minutes :-)

April scrapbook pages

Since I'm way behind I'll post some scrapbook pages that I did at a crop in April - got lots done and LOVED a day away on my own. It was productive and fun . . . can you ask for more? I'm getting rusty though and really need some new inspiration before I tackle any new pages!

I took a blog-cation

Yes, here I am alive and well and back from my much extended blog-cation. To be honest, I don't have an exciting and dramatic excuse for my absence, I've just simply been busy doing other things. And haven't had much earth-shattering news to share. And have admittedly become worse than a heroine addict lately on my new found online pleasure, Facebook. If you're not there - do it, join. It will needlessly suck away endless minutes and hours you could be spending working on more productive ventures. And I should note, I was floored at the number of messages I received from people disappointed the blog was barren - but thanks for the interest and keep it coming!

We are all doing well and spring has arrived in Ottawa. Thus we spend much of our time outside and are all better people for it! The boys are sometimes playing nicely together and now that David is 18 months it is interesting to watch them interact and communicate with each other.

Here is "cool dude" David. Note the still bald head and several battle wounds on his face.

Pete with one on his ninja turtle "weapons" from my vacuum cleaner . . . we never leave the house without that thing!

Our trip to Florida!

All four of us are back from our trip to Florida, alive and in one piece!! Miracles *do* happen :-)

We had a fantastic time and really needed the break. We stayed with my mom and dad (Nana and Grandad) at a condo they had rented for the month of March. It was absolutely beautiful, RIGHT on the ocean on Redington Beach near St. Petersburg. It's so peaceful to wake up every morning to the lulling sounds of crashing waves and rippling water . . . and that salt sea air smells so good. It was just like being back home in Nova Scotia, except, much, much warmer and sunny every single day!

The weather was fab - 85 degrees or so literally every day. For a pathetic family from Ottawa, this is extremely warm weather for this time of year. When we left it was snowing and there was ice everywhere. Shorts and sandals were certainly what the doctor ordered!

The boys were excellent on our flights down (we transferred in Detroit). They were *active* on the plane although no screaming or anything unmanageable. They were thrilled when we arrived and were so excited to see the ocean and sand right outside our window.

Here is the condo we stayed at - it was huge and perfect for us. There were three bedrooms and our rooms were well away from my parents' so everyone had their own space. Pete was overwhelmed with glee when he found the kids' room had bunk beds and insisted he sleep on the top bunk b/c he is now "a big boy". So, although I was much more nervous than Paul, we let him and it was fine. He slept perfectly and the huge rail prevented him from even coming close to falling out.

Sunset was the best part of the day . . . simple beauty followed by the peace that would ensue after the boys were asleep :-)!

A view up the beach from our window. The waves were not too big so it was perfect for two toddlers. I had to laugh - we were often some of the only people in the water swimming some days . . . probably too cold for the locals but not for us northerners!!

Paul is the person on the right, flying a kite he and Pete bought. Of course I cut the kite out of the picture, but it was actually very high! Pete was excited, Paul let him hold it by himself a few times.
Here I am lounging on the front patio with David and Grandad. That sparkle in my eye is not the sunset, it was actually a couple Bloody Mary's my dad whipped up for me :-)!

A couple days into our trip we drove into nearby Tampa so I could meet a couple friends from one of my online message boards. Both girls have toddlers roughly the same age as David. On the left of me is G, and her daughter Eleanor and on the right is J and her son Quinn. It was a lot of fun and we all got along like we had know each other for a long time (wait - we have known each other for a long time!).

Eleanor the little cutie, looking gorgeous as usual.

In the children's play area David gives Quinn a big hug. "Heck, I don't care if our moms met on the Internet, I'm really having a blast here!"

Paul, my dad, and Peter took in a real baseball game at Dunedin to see Tampa Bay play the Toronto Blue Jays. Pete is typically good with hockey and other "active" sports, but I figured getting him to sit for a long time during a ball game would be an arduous task. He lasted 3 1/2 innings, urged to stay for that long by a box of popcorn and two ice slushies.

Meanwhile David and I headed to the outlets for an afternoon of hard core shopping. We did pretty well. I got some goodies for my new nephew Pierson and bought my first Coach bag. Yes, it was significantly marked down since I bought it at the outlet store but it's authentic nonetheless ;-)!
My sister and her husband Mark were visiting the same area and staying with her MIL Barb. They spent some time with us so I caught a cute shot of all three cousins enjoying some lunch while catching some Backyardigans.
Reese is such a big girl now . . . eight months old and happy and smiling all the time. She's a real cutie and was loving hanging out with her entertaining cousins. She laughed at David constantly.

We spent a day at the Florida Aquarium - it was totally cool! Pete and David loved all the fish and we saw a few minutes of a shark show. Before Pete had simply had enough and bolted away and ran to the next exhibit!

Lauren with Reese and David, and a scene from Finding Nemo behind her!

I really should have known there was an outdoor water park at the Aquarium, but that detail had escaped me. So here is Pete sans swimsuit, stripped down to his shorts and running around the park like a maniac. David was so fast I couldn't catch him on camera!

And if you're not gagging already at all the pictures, here are a few shots of the kids at the beach. I had over a hundred photos, but thought I'd spare you all, obviously!

Reese floating out to sea in her blow up lobster.
David happy as a clam with his beach toys.

Peter creating a sand castle masterpiece.

The ever-curious David scoping out the sand.

Here are my three guys having fun on the beach and enjoying the sunshine!
